On this date in 1858, Minnesota became the 32nd state in the Union. A small extension of the northern boundary makes it the most northerly of the 48 conterminous U.S. states. (This peculiar protrusion is the result of a boundary agreement with Great Britain before the area had been carefully surveyed.)

On this date in 1964, Hubert H. Humphrey is elected the 38th Vice President of the United States. Prior to becoming Vice President, Humphrey helped found the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL) in 1944, and in 1945, won election as mayor of Minneapolis. Humphrey later served three terms in the U.S. Senate from 1949 to 1964 and was the Senate Majority Whip from 1961 to 1964. After losing the Democratic Presidential nomination to Richard Nixon in the 1968 race, Humphrey again served in the U.S. Senate from 1971-1978. He died while in office on January 13, 1978 of bladder cancer at his home in Waverly, Minnesota. His body lay in state at both the U.S. Capitol and Minnesota State Capitol, and was interred in Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis.
