On this date in 1843, the Board of Commissioner’s of St. Croix County, Wisconsin, grants a license to Henry Jackson “to keep a tavern for one year…at St. Paul’s.” The license cost ten dollars. Jackson’s tavern and store were located on the Mississippi River at the foot of the street that now bears his name.

On the same day, Jackson was certified as justice of the peace and was the first person to hold that office in what later would become the city of St. Paul.
