On This Date In Twin Cities History - July 27, 1898
On this date in 1898, the cornerstone for the current State Capitol building was laid in St. Paul by Alexander Ramsey, the first territorial governor and second governor of the State of Minnesota. After nine years of construction at a cost of $4.5 million, the building was opened to the public on Jan. 2, 1905, one day before the 34th legislature convened.
