On this date in 1859, the Nobles expedition to Canada gets under way from St. Paul. Stimulated by the discovery of gold on the Frazier River in British Columbia, an expedition, headed by Colonel William H. Nobles and sponsored by the St. Paul City Council, set out to explore the feasibility of an overland route to the Canadian Rockies to channel the trade of that region through St. Paul.
